So it might be a bit much at first while you learn all the mechanics. However, Nioh 2 does add some more mechanics compared to Nioh 1. Nioh 2 is way less grindy since XP accumulation happens way faster. XP accumulation is just really slow so it takes a long time to level up. It's easier to play around with the deep combat mechanisms if you aren't dying constantly, to see what works for you. I think Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is the best to play first since it has difficulty level selection. The games are primarily melee but they also have very fun magic systems. Nioh, Nioh 2, and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin are all by the same developer and have deep, satisfying melee combat. It also helps if you are generally a fan of martial arts action movies :D Beating it though and the rest of the game was still super satisfying. The second level (The Club) kicked my ass at the beginning but it was so much fun that I didn't even care that much. They also added cheat modifiers recently to the game. Levels are generally short but you can unlock keys for secret rooms and shortcuts, to keep them fresh. I didn't like this system at first but it actually works quite well. So at some point you have to decide if you want to continue with an incomplete move set or replay older levels, to unlock more moves. The game punishes you for dying too often and will lock certain moves entirely from you, if you haven't unlocked them already until that point. Throwing enemies off railings or through tables and walls and so on. There are also several fun environmental interactions like kicking down chairs or throwing bottles to stun enemies. All with their own unique move set and unlockables. There are actually a couple of basic weapons like staffs, bats, blades and knifes. playing more aggressive, playing more defensive, relying on parries, relying on weapons etc. You have to spent your earned XP wisely early on, to unlock moves that fit your playstyle, e.g. You start the game with only a handful of moves and go from there.
